Professional Experience
BALL STATE UNIVERSITY; Muncie, Indiana (March 2003 – Present). Production Manager NewsLink Indiana, College of Communication, Information and Media.  In charge of all aspects of television news production from acquisition to directing live newscasts.  Help to launch NewsLink Indiana from concept to working newsroom/set/control room. As a part of the project, I am now trained in Avid News Cutter editing, Chyron Duet LEX-2, Aprisa still store, Parker Vision PVTV News CR 500, and a trained system administrator for AVID iNews.  One of 2 professionals that manage a staff of over a dozen students while putting together daily news briefs that air on WIPB-TV Channel 49 and newslinkindiana.com.

BALL STATE UNIVERSITY; Muncie, Indiana (July 1995 – March 2003). Electronic Media Coordinator; Department of University Relations. Previous position upgraded to include electronic media, promoting the university by providing data through e-mail, CD-ROM and the Internet.  Upgraded in July 1999 to professional status. Digital acquisition and postproduction of audio and video for broadcast using DVCAM and non-linear editing system. Direct multi-camera coverage of events such as presidential inauguration and commencement for live web streaming. Assistant web editor for the Ball State University News Center; http://www.bsu.edu/news . Additional responsibility of web editor and supervising a graduate assistant added in 2002.

NATIONAL PRESS PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION TELEVISION NEWS VIDEO WORKSHOP; Norman, Oklahoma (March 1997 - present). Faculty for annual television news video workshop. Responsible for lighting and sound re-enforcement in large 300+ seat Forum room.  Also room captain heading up critiques for shoot and edit participants.

BALL STATE UNIVERSITY; Muncie, Indiana (November 1990 - July 1995). Broadcast Coordinator; Department of Public Information Services. Responsible for the promotion of the university via radio and television stations and networks. Act as a liaison between university and broadcast news operations. In charge of the radio news hotline serving stations across the state. Supervise one part-time news producer. Write and produce recruiting and fund-raising video presentations. Serve as a consultant to university offices in production of videotapes for internal audiences: includes budget development, copywriting and production coordination.

FREELANCE TELEVISION CREW; Various locations (1990 - present).  Work as television camera operator, telecommunications assistant, and utility crew for several stations and networks including ABC, NBC, FOX Sports, ESPN, Big Ten Network, NBA Entertainment and Madison Square Garden Network.  The televised events are usually sporting events and have included The Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400, Indiana Pacers, Monday Night Football, World Basketball Championships, college basketball, college football, college field and ice hockey and professional golf.

BALL STATE UNIVERSITY; Muncie, Indiana (June 1992 - present). Adjunct Instructor; Departments of Telecommunications and Journalism. Teach various university courses including electronic news gathering, writing for electronic media and television production.

WISH - TV; Indianapolis, Indiana (May 1987 - November 1990). Photojournalist responsible for producing news packages for daily broadcasts. Live and videotaped segments, in the field and in the studio. Responsible for take home microwave truck and BetaCam equipment.

WOTV - TV; Grand Rapids, Michigan (May 1985 - May 1987). News Photographer obtaining practical live microwave experience and shooting from station helicopters.

WIFR - TV; Rockford, Illinois (June 1984 - May 1985). Responsible for newsgathering in the field and the in house preparations of three newscasts per day.

GENERAL ELECTRIC CABLEVISION; Anderson, Indiana (August 1983 - March 1984). Production department employee responsible for production and airing of local programs and commercials.

 

Educational Background

BALL STATE UNIVERSITY; Muncie, Indiana (August 2007 – Present) Enrolled in the Digital Storytelling Masters Degree program in the Department of Telecommunications. Expected completion: May 2009.

FEDERAL EMERGENGY MANAGEMENT AGENCY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE; (July 23-27, 2001) Selected to attend Integrated Emergency Management Course: Consequences of Terrorism at Mount Weather Emergency Assistance Center in Bluemont, Virginia.  Intensive training designed for Delaware County Emergency Officials utilizing realistic exercises involving terrorist attacks.  

NATIONAL PRESS PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION WORKSHOP; Norman, Oklahoma (March 15 - 21, 1987 and March 17 - 23, 1991). Shooting participant in the 27th and 31st annual television news video workshops. Successfully completed all exercises in what is known as “Boot Camp” for photojournalists.

COUNCIL FOR THE ADVANCEMENT AND SUPPORT OF EDUCATION (CASE) SUMMER INSTITUTE; Notre Dame, Indiana (July 31 - August 4, 1993). Participated in intensive studies for communications professionals in higher education.                       

WISH - TV INTERNSHIP; Indianapolis, Indiana (May - August 1983). Rigorous work in electronic newsgathering. Emphasis on shooting, lighting, studio recording, editing and general television production.

BALL STATE UNIVERSITY; Muncie, Indiana (August 1980 - May 1984). Graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Telecommunications with a film and production emphasis.

Miscellaneous

DELAWARE COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY; Muncie, Indiana (1998 - 2003).  Officially sworn in and appointed to serve as Public Information Officer.  Assist with media relations during emergencies in the county.  Serve on the Emergency Management Advisory Council.

BALL STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI COUNCIL; Muncie, Indiana (1998 - 2001).  Representative to the governing body of the Alumni Association from the Telecommunications Alumni Society Board.  Served on the technology subcommittee.

BALL STATE UNIVERSITY TELECOMMUNICATIONS ALUMNI SOCIETY BOARD;
Muncie, Indiana (1996 - 2001).  Elected position on board that helps guide academic programs in the Department of Telecommunications.  Serve as faculty of TCOM 299X, an undergraduate course taught by alumni professionals.

BALL STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT AND CAMPUS LIFE COUNCIL; (1999 – 2003).  Represent University Advancement area as an ex-officio member of committee reporting to University Senate.

CROSSROADS OF AMERICA COUNCIL OF THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA; Indianapolis, Indiana (1982 - 1984, 1998 – 1999, January 2003 - Present).  Serve as assistant Boy Scout troop master and as Tiger Cub Scout leader. Wood Badge C-39-04, Bobwhite.

NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING CONFERENCE (2005, 2007, 2008) Staff position as Assistant Scoutmaster for White Stag course in the Crossroads of America Council in Indiana.

VARIOUS COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER SERVICES; Muncie, Indiana (1990 - Present) Donated personal time to Habitat for Humanity, Cardinal Varsity Club, International Television Association, Boy Scouts of America, Grace Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian Church, Storer Elementary School, WCRH television, WIPB Telesale, Muncie Endurathon, and the Cardinal Greenway. Served on the media relations committee for the International Triathlon Championships in 1997.
